These medications copy a signal your body already sends after meals — a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) that tells your brain you're full and slows how fast your stomach empties. You feel full sooner. Cravings quiet down.
A GLP-1 medication
Semaglutide mimics the natural GLP-1 signal your gut releases after eating. It's the active ingredient studied in the STEP trials — a series of large clinical studies that measured how much weight people lost on it.
A dual GLP-1 and GIP medication
Tirzepatide works on two fullness hormones at once — GLP-1 and a second one called GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, people on tirzepatide lost about 17% more body weight than those on semaglutide — for someone starting at 200 lbs, that's roughly 34 additional lbs over the course of treatment.

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are different medications and aren't interchangeable. A licensed clinician chooses which one — and at what dose — is right for you.
